Ladies, A.W.A.R.E

Ladies, A.W.A.R.E

A few months ago I decided to step outside my comfort zone and cash in on the Groupon that James brought for me ages ago. So, I sucked up my fear, and attended my first gun safety class at Eagle Shooting Range in Concord, NC.

The course, Ladies A.W.A.R.E Firearms and Self Defense, is designed, taught by and taught to women, and is worth every penny. I'd had the Groupon for more than six months and had basically thought of every excuse under the sun to not attend.

My biggest fears? (1) The class would be filled with sharpshooters that could could shoot a smiley face on to a target at 50 yards... while blindfolded with a baby on their hip. (2) I would wound up an unfortunate internet sensation because the kick from my gun would knock me unconscious. (3) There would be some judgmental jerk in the back of the class loudly declaring how women wouldn't be in danger if they stayed in the kitchen.

Imagine my supreme relief when I showed up to a class filled entirely with women who all had the same fears as I did.

The Ladies A.W.A.R.E course is held about four times a month, and is taught by Aaren, who has a certificate in darn near everything including:

    •     NCDOJ Certified NC Concealed Carry Handgun Instructor
    •      NRA Certified Basic Pistol Instructor
    •      NRA Certified Range Safety Officer
    •      Ladies A.W.A.R.E.™ Creator and Instructor

This course is a FANTASTIC introduction to firearms. Especially for women who are a bit jittery about the concept of firing a gun. And the instructor, Aaren, is amazingly friendly and knows her stuff when it comes to firearms.

Some of the topics we discussed included:
    • Some of the biggest misconceptions about guns
    • The importance of gun safety
    • An overview (including video) of how a gun actually fires
    • How to properly hold a gun
    • How to stand when shooting
    • How to load and unload a gun
    • Proper maintenance and storage
    • Information concerning the legalities of owning a gun
Once the educational portion of the class concluded, we were suppose to head out to the range for some shooting time, however, because of the current issue with gun control laws, people have started stockpiling ammo. So we were given the option to come back for one-one-one shooting time with Aaren (which I actually preferred).

By the time I left the range, I felt so relieved. For years I have been trying to work up the nerve to learn how to shoot a gun. My personal belief is that every woman should learn how to defend herself. Our dads, brothers, boyfriends and husbands can always be there to save the day. It's 2013 and the world isn't getting any safer, in fact, it's only getting worse.

According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, “22 million women in the United States have been raped in their lifetime. 63.84% of women who reported being raped, physically assaulted, and/or stalked since age 18 were victimized by a current or former husband, cohabiting partner, boyfriend, or date.” Don’t wait to become a victim. Now is the time to learn how to defend both yourself, and your family.

If you live in the Charlotte area, and you really want to learn how to handle a gun (the right way) I highly suggest you give Aaren a call. As I mentioned before, this class is taught about four times a month. She also does private at home courses for ladies in groups of four or more.

If you live in a place other than Charlotte and you see a gun safety class, I highly suggest you try it out before brushing it off. Who knows, it may just save your life one day.

    XOXO Reese

BTW) I did not receive any compensation whatsoever for sharing my review and opinion of the Ladies A.W.A.R.E. course.

    1. Hahaha... love how you described your three biggest fears. Hilarious. Glad it turned out to be a good experience.

    2. Sounds awesome! Congrats!!! So glad you're sharing this - more women should be getting educated in gun safety :)
