10 Signs You're An Actual Nerd

10 Signs You're An Actual Nerd

Apparently Nerdy is the new black. I'm not sure when the transformation happened. It must have been somewhere between the explosion of the quaint little chain coffee shops that pepper every corner of every block, and the first episode of The Big Bang Theory. Either way, Nerds are now considered chic.

Unfortunately for me, I was a nerd well before the hipsters began sprouting up with their prescription-less glasses and Talk Nerdy To Me screen t-shirts. I've alluded to this before in a previous post, but I was a nerd well before it was considered cool.

I'll admit, I get a bit territorial when I see someone who's clearly unqualified trying to encroach on my title. It is a title I have proudly suffered and spilled blood for. Still, I am happy to welcome my truly nerdy brother's and sisters into the fold. Curious about whether or not you fit the bill? Check out this list of ten signs you're an actual nerd.

1.You are a blogger and understand any of the following acronyms: HTML, SEO, or CSS.
2. You know the difference between there, their, and they're.
3.  You are a proud Whovian and can explain temporal paradoxes without the use of Google or Wikipedia.
4. You get excited every year on March 14th.
5. You silently correct people's grammar while they're speaking to you.
6. You still don't know what YOLO means.
7. You own more comic books than shoes.
8. You can name at least five NPR programs.
9. You've dressed up as one of the following for Halloween: a Tardis, a Stormtrooper, a Rubik's cube, or a Starfleet member.
10. You'd happily choose Comic-Con over an all expense paid trip to NYC any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

So there we have it. Of course this list is not exhaustive, but it's a start for those who have found themselves teetering on the edge of nerdom. If you can relate to at least three of these items on the list, well then welcome to the dark side ;)

So are you a true nerd? If so, how do you feel about this new hipster trend and the rise of fake nerds?

  1. #2 and #5...I think that just makes me a grammar nazi. :) I've also been known to correct people's mistakes in their Facebook posts. I think that's the teacher in me. You can call yourself a hipster nerd because you were nerdy "before it was cool." :)

  2. I am def that person that corrects grammar! They're, their and there drive me nuts. I also hate it when people day woman when they should be saying women. One is plural the other is singular. LOL, sadly I didn't have 3 from the list but I now I have a lot of googling to do. I must know what happens on March 14, LOL!

    1. I actually spent the summer watching all the episodes from the begining of the series so I feel like I am finally an official Whovian. Thank you Netflix ;)

  4. I detest the fad of wearing fake glasses to look nerdy. One of my sisters does that. Of course, it's because I'm biased; I have to wear glasses and I hate glasses, I'd love to have perfect vision!
I'm probably kind of geeky/nerdy, though not in the cultural way. I don't really watch any of the movie or tv shows associated with nerds. But in the academic, annoying know-it-all way, I am, though I try to hide it. I never correct people's English, though, because I'm annoyed when someone tries to correct my English and then I have to explain the subjunctive mood to them. One time I brought up an applicable reference to something in Confucius' Analects during an everyday conversation and that's when I realized that I should do a better job of keeping my obscure references to myself. Who just talks about the Analects randomly??

    1. Yep I have about 50 pairs of glasses, but I assure you they are all necessary. I no longer correct people's grammer out loud because of what you said, it's seriously annoying when people try to do it to me.

I did skip the academia portion of nerdom because I figured it was a given ;) Recently I've learned that discussing certain topics in certain company will only lead to people looking at me with their eyes glazed over. I've learned to control my impulses, for the most part ;)

  5. Merely 1, 2 and 5 fit me! I think I'm more geek, though. I'm more into web design and CSS and whatnot, as well as social media. :p

I'm not really understanding the hipster thing that's been going on, but it's getting really annoying. :x

    1. The hipster thing is driving me nuts! If only being geeky was considered cool when I was in my teens. It probably would have saved me a lot of beat-downs. Hopefully it will remain "chic" long enough for my daughter to make it through her teens. If she's anything like her father and I she's going to have it rough...

  6. Phew! I thought I could only qualify if I got all ten. At least three is very achievable but puts me in the sub genre word-nerd by the looks of it. Fab post nerdy girl! Thanks.
