Breastfeeding is hard.

Before Little J was born, I was under the impression that breastfeeding was something that just came naturally to mothers. I truly believed that immediately after birth, my maternal instincts would automatically kick in, and I would instantly know how to do all the things, including breastfeeding. But I also thought that within a week of giving birth, life would return to normal.

I know, you can stop laughing now...

Clearly I had a very skewed perception of motherhood. Now that baby number two is on the way, I still have every intention of breastfeeding, but I'm a little less naive about how demanding it will be, and am determined to bring the right tools to the table. Which is why my first official purchase for baby number 2 was a pack of NUK Simply Natural Bottles. Because baby's gotta eat, and mama's gotta sleep.

If you're new to this whole crazy train known as motherhood, let me officially welcome you aboard and give you a bit of advice that would have saved me some serious heartache.

If You're Planning on Breastfeeding, Have a Trusted Bottle

This is something I neglected to do. Back when Little J was born, I was finishing up the last leg of my college career. I returned to school almost immediately, but it was incredibly difficult to manage because my kiddo was basically 100% reliant on me to provide her food. We tried a few bottles, but they weren't specifically designed to mimic the breast, so she wasn't interested. Truthfully, I'm not sure how we survived 18 months. Things probably would have been different if I had also tried a bottle that was specifically designed to encourage breastfed babies to also accept a bottle.

Which is why this time around I'm taking no chances and already am stocking up on NUK Simply Natural Bottles located at your local Target. Unlike most other brands, 93% of babies accept NUK nipples and 97% of mothers agree that the multiple nipple holes help to simulate the natural feeding experience that breastfed babies need. And if that's not enough, it's odor and stain resistant, not to mention BPA Free.

I know, it's a lot of crazy terminology that you might not quite know what to do with yet, but trust me, that's everything you want in a bottle, and more.

Let Sleeping Babies Lie...

We get it. They're cute. And chunky. And you just want to cuddle them. Don't do it. The moment those adorably long eye lashes peel open and those cute little lips open to release a high-pitched wail, you will instantly regret it. The more they sleep, the more they grow, and the longer you retain your sanity.

Don't Be Afraid to Ask For Help

It's okay to ask for help. I wish I had known this the first time around. But I was too afraid that asking for help meant that I was incapable of taking care of my kiddo. So I sucked it up. And now, I wish I hadn't. I wish I had been willing to ask friends and family for help.

And even if you don't have friends who live close by, it's 2017 we have many food and grocery delivery services, and countless other ways to make your life that much easier. It doesn't make you weak to ask for help, it makes you efficient and strategic. A well rested/ less stressed mother can give her new babe even more love and attention. A win-win for everyone.

Keep Gas in the Car

You're going to need it. Don't believe me? I didn't believe it either until I found myself circle the block for the umpteenth time at 1 AM trying to calm my screeching bundle of joy.

Enjoy it. It Goes Fast

From the moment she was first placed on my chest, it seems as though time has sped up. I was so eager to see her take her first steps, and hear her say her first words, that I feel like I missed out on the moments that truly matter. Milestones are great, but it's those quiet moments when you're staring into each others eyes and you realize all is as it should be. Don't rush it. Life goes fast enough.
